Every year, from late May to mid-June, all mature (usually four years old and above) male milu will participate in the fights for kingship. It is a good time to exercise at the early sunrise. The male milu either fight alone or in groups, or practice fighting, to develop strong muscles and beautiful figures. The reeds, meadows, forests and lakes are their wrestling arenas.

After the antlers are completely ossified, the milu freely chooses an opponent with comparable physical strength to start a duel. The winner then chooses a new opponent from other winners to begin a new round of jousting. After rounds of screening and elimination, the winner of the last round becomes the "milu king". In fact, the kingship of the milu is very short, only three months. After the "reign", the king will return to the herd and becomes an ordinary milu.
