2023-02-17

This Chinese folk song with a history of at least 400 years can be traced back to the Ming and Qing dynasties. It has been widely spread in Jiangsu area. In 1957 it was first released in the form of a single "Jasmine" after some adaption. Today, "Jasmine" is not only a household name in China, but also one of the representative elements of Chinese culture. It was included in music textbooks in the Asia-Pacific region in 1982, becoming one of the great songs recommended by UNESCO to people all over the world.

The pentatonic tune of "Jasmine" shows distinct characteristics of Chinese folk music. It has a smooth melody and a well-proportioned structure, which contains periodic repetitions, expressing a dulcet, smooth, soft, and graceful style of regions south of the Yangtze River in China. It depicts a vivid scene where an elegant and virtuous girl is attracted by the fragrant and beautiful jasmine flowers, but she doesn’t want to pick them up, and yet she is reluctant to leave the flowers. This classic is beautifully and exquisitely composed and sung to express deep and implicit emotions.
