Luoshan Dragon

With nearly 100 meters in length, Luoshan Dragon is known as the “No.1 Dragon in Regions South of the Yangtze River”, which has far-reaching impact in Lishui District, Gaochun District and other surrounding areas. “To see the dragon dance in the 1st and 12th lunar months in Luoshan” has become a conventional and popular cultural entertainment activity. The dragon dance is usually performed during the lunar new year to pray for blessings and favorable climatic weather in the coming year.

It is said that during the reign of Wanli Emperor in the Ming Dynasty, Yang Pei’an, the former third-ranking candidate in the highest imperial examinations, sought shelter in the temple and encountered a small white dragon being punished. Yang Pei’an took pity on it and asked for a favor to head priest of the Daoist sect. Then, he brought the dragon back to Luoshan Village to pray for favorable weather and benefit the locals. Since then, the dragon dance has become a traditional custom in Luoshan Village.
