Zhenjiang Museum, located in Zhenjiang City, Jiangsu Province, was founded in 1958. The current building was completed in 1890. It is on the site of the former British Consulate, covering an area of 11,700 square meters. It is a local historical comprehensive art museum.
Zhenjiang Museum, lying on the Yuntai Mount on the west, near to the magnificent Yangtze River to the north, next to the Xijindu Ancient street in the east, is one of the earliest consulates built along the coastal area and river in China. A total of 5 buildings are there, whose architectural style is of Victoria style. She looks solemn and well-proportioned on the side of the mountain and the river. Although having gone through a hundred years of wind and rain, her style still keeps unchanged.
This modern architectural heritage has significant historical, scientific and artistic values. Its unique style and features as well as intact preservation are rare in the whole country. Therefore, on November 26, 1996, it was announced by the State Council as a national key unit to be protected.
The whole museum area has gone through an overall environment and landscape renovation in accordance with the British style of gardens. Zhenjiang Museum has been comprehensively transformed into a first-class garden museum and a unique cultural tourist attraction in China.
Zhenjiang Museum is now a magnificent art museum with a rich collection of more than 30,000 cultural relics ranging from the Stone Age to Ming and Qing dynasties and 100,000 volumes of ancient books. Among them, there is one national level cultural relic, more than 70 national first level cultural relics and more than 300 second level cultural relics. Bronze wares of the Western Zhou dynasty, blue porcelain of the Six Dynasties, gold and silver wares of the Tang, Song, Yuan and Ming dynasties as well as calligraphy and painting of the Ming and Qing dynasties are the characteristics of the collection in the museum. These treasures, shining with the wisdom and civilization of the Chinese nation, show the footprint of the historical development of the ancient city Zhenjiang.
