During the Ming Dynasty, the Huai'an Government Office was the largest one in Jiangsu.

There are many ancient county-level government offices in China, but very few prefecture-level government offices. As one of them in Jiangsu, Huai’an Ancient Prefecture-level Government Office is a national AAAA-level tourist attraction.

Ancient Prefecture-level Government Office is called as Fushu or Fuya in Chinese. During the Ming Dynasty, the Huai’an Government Office was the largest one in Jiangsu.

The most distinctive one is the lobby of Huai’an Government Office, which covers an area of more than 500 square meters. There are about 50 houses and 600 rooms in the center, which are divided into East, Middle, and West sides. The Middle side has the biggest lobby, the second hall, and Liuke rooms. The East side is for guesting and banquets while the West side is the Army arresting hall. Outside the gate are lion statues, screen wall facing the gate of a house, and the archway.

During the Ming and Qing Dynasties, Huai’an was one of the most important cities along the canal, and it was named alongside Yangzhou, Suzhou and Hangzhou. Huai’an Government Office has witnessed a lot famous cases such as Li Yuchang’s “Granary of the Country” and the “Dou E’s Injustice”, a drama Guan Hanqing wrote.
