Suzhou fan crafting skill, one of the traditional local handicraft skills in Suzhou, Jiangsu, is famous for its elegant and exquisite style and rich artistic features. It has a long history and is well-known both at home and abroad. On May 20, 2006, fan crafting skill was listed in the first batch of national intangible cultural heritage lists.
“Suzhou Ya Fan” includes folding fan, sandalwood fan and round silk fan. As early as more than 600 years ago, there were workshops in Suzhou that were specialized in folding fans, and famous brand products appeared, such as the famous Golden Bamboo Bone Fan. More than 400 years ago, Suzhou Fan became a royal tribute and the fan crafting industry began to flourish.
Suzhou Ya Fan combines various exquisite techniques, including modeling, mounting, carving, inlaying, painting and other techniques. The fan bone crafting of folding fan is famous for its rich changes and exquisite workmanship. The polished bamboo bone folding fan is even, fine, bright and clean, elegant and unsophisticated. With the development of history, the shape and decoration of Suzhou Ya Fan Yu are increasingly refined and elegant. Fan craftsmen use techniques such as grinding, painting, carving and inlaying on bamboo bones to carve flowers, birds, insects, grass, mountains and rivers, characters, bells, tripods, calligraphies and poems, making the fan more beautiful and precious.
Suzhou fan has always been an indispensable treasure of literati. Painting and writing poems on the fan is a great hobby of Suzhou literati. Fan – face painting has become an independent category in painting. It’s either painted with bright peony or painted with clear mountains and rivers, with poems of the same theme, and the name ” Ya Fan” is worthy of the name.
