Weaving Technique of Song Brocade

Weaving technique of Song Brocade is one of the traditional handicrafts of Suzhou in China and belongs to the national intangible cultural heritage. Suzhou is a famous ancient silk city in China, which is the hometown of embroidery and silk.

The Song Brocade produced in Suzhou has fine weaving and elegant style. With the traditional style and characteristics from the Song Dynasty, it is obviously different from the popular glossy gold brocade and silk in the Yuan and Ming Dynasties. At the Suzhou Silk Museum, there are some Song Brocade collections and weaving tools.

On May 20, 2006, Song Brocade weaving skills were approved by the State Council to be included in the first batch of national intangible cultural heritage. Traditional Song Brocade is produced in more than 20 processes from dyeing to weaving. Song Brocade that has high historical and cultural values is not only an important part of the excellent traditional silk culture of Suzhou, an ancient silk city, but also an outstanding masterpiece of traditional Chinese silk art.
