Located in the center of Huai’an City, the towering, magnificent and antique Zhenhuai Tower, also known as Huai’an Drum Tower, is one of the landmark buildings there. During the Ming and Qing dynasties, the Grand Canal that ran through the entire territory of Huai’an was the lifeblood of China’s north-south traffic. Grain carriers had to cross the Yangtze River and the Huai River from the Grand Canal before arriving at Huai’an, to finally go north. Therefore, at that time, cargo ships would believe that they are safe after arriving at Huai’an, and officials and merchants related to water transport had to libate on the Zhenhuai Tower to pray for safety of the ships.
