Huai Opera, also known as Jianghua Opera and Huai Xi, is an ancient local opera that originated in Huai'an, Jiangsu Province and Lixia River area in Yancheng.

Huai Opera, also known as Jianghua Opera and Huai Xi, is an ancient local opera that originated in Huai’an, Jiangsu Province and Lixia River area in Yancheng.

In June 2008, Huai Opera, applied by Yancheng City, Jiangsu Province, was approved by the State Council to be included in the second batch of national intangible cultural heritage list. In May 2011, Huia Opera, applied by Huia’an together with Taizhou, Jiangsu Province, was approved to be added into the third batch of national intangible cultural heritage.

The language of the Huai Opera is based on the dialects of today’s Jianghuai Mandarin, as well as the local dialects of Huai’an and Yanfu. As a stage language, it has the advantages of stable tone, four distinct sounds, five tones, charm and pleasant music and so on.

As of 2015, there are 14 public Huai Opera Troupes in the country, of which 12 are in Jiangsu.

The 2,600-square-meter Huai Opera Museum is located in the northeast of Julong Lake area, which is a Ming and Qing style courtyard house.
